Born, Kingston-upon-Hull, East Yorkshire, UK, 18 November 1929.

B.Sc. Hons. Chemistry, 1949 (External student of University of London at Hull Municipal Technical College).

A.R.I.C (1950) by examination, 1949.

1949-1951: National Service, RAF Education Branch, Technical Training Command.

1951-1958: Research and Development Chemist, British Industrial Solvents Ltd. (Distillers Company Limited), Salt End, Hedon, Hull: Laboratory Chemist and Pilot Plant Team Leader, including periods of secondment to Distillers Company Central Research Department, Great Burgh, Epsom (3 months) and Anzin, Imperial Smelting Corporation, Avonmouth (1 year).

1958-1960:  Research Assistant, Northern Polytechnic, London.

Ph.D. (Lond.), 1960;  Thesis: "Interaction of Boron Trichloride with Secondary Amines" (Supervisor Dr. W. Gerrard).

1960-1994:  Full time member of academic staff at Northern Polytechnic / The Polytechnic of North London / University of North London. Reader from 1969, Professor from 1990.  Sometime Deputy Head and Acting Head of Department.

F.R.I.C. (1964), subsequently C.Chem., F.R.S.C.

Recognized Teacher of the University of London from 1965; member for many years of the University's Board of Studies in Chemistry and Chemical Industry, and the University's Boards of Staff Examiners for BSc Chemistry and BSc General degrees for internal and external students. Assistant examiner for over 20 years for London GCE `A' level chemistry. 

D.Sc. (Lond.), 1976,  for research on "Alkyl Halides, Inorganic Esters, and Related Compounds".

Honorary Research Fellow, University College London, 1979-1980.

Invited Lecturer in Organic Reaction Mechanisms, Royal Holloway College, University of London, 1979-1982.

Emeritus Professor, University of North London (now London Metropolitan University), from 1995.
